Mai Tai is derived from Tahitian for out of this world, the best -- a self-aggrandizing name to be sure, but perhaps prescient given the drink’s popularity. The recipe, invented at the original Trader Vic’s in Oakland, achieves the seemingly impossible: it makes a simple tiki drink. Avoid store-bought Mai Tai mixers and use only fresh ingredients -- it makes a huge difference. The orgeat (almond syrup) separates this cocktail from a Daiquiri or Margarita, adding an exotic sensation that takes you right to the tropics.
